Online Dating for Middle School Students?

A school in Elwood, Indiana started an underage matchmaking service for their 11 year old students. It purports to be a fund raiser for their drama club. Children pay a dollar and they are “matched” with another student.
Call me old fashioned…..but whatever happened to school dances and such?
I consider myself to be pretty well adjusted and extremely open minded. I have seen some pretty crazy stuff on the internets going back to the mid 1990′s, but for some reason, the fact that a middle school is matching 11 year old kids up is a bit disturbing to me.
Shouldn’t children that age be focusing on playing video games and riding their bicycles? Just the other day I was in Target and in line waiting to checkout. I was behind a mother and what appeared to be her 10? year old daughter. The little girl was holding a cell phone, texting someone. When I was 10 years old and I needed to get in contact with someone and I was out in public, I would pop a quarter out of my pocket and try and find the nearest payphone.
Yes, I do realize that children do need cell phones as an extra safety buffer and it’s really convenient for Moms in this day and age. But to me, it seems like the children of late are getting more and more adult privileges and isn’t that in some way ruining their childhood?
I really have nothing more to say on this. I’m having a very rare moment where I’m just speechless.
Go ahead and flame me if you want, but I strongly feel that children should be treated as children. Spare the rod, spoil the child type of stuff. My personal observations are that parents in this day and age are too damn lenient on their children.
