Free Online Background Checks

Are there such things as free online background checks, or background checks for members of online dating sites?
No and yes are the short answers.
Most of the online websites that you find charge a fee for their services. Some of them do nothing more than link you to the nearest courthouse in the state that you select. Most of the time you will need a case number in order to find out any information (for free) on someone. Some of the smaller courthouses will allow you to search by first and/or last name, a few of those will require a drivers license. I would advise you to stay away from those sites as they offer nothing more than what is freely available on the internet.
If you are looking for free public information simply do a Google search for the city you live in (or the city that the person whom you are trying to find out more information about lives in) along with the word “courthouse”. If there are no local courthouses in your area, Google will show you the nearest courthouses within a certain distance.
The online investigative websites that do provide information that requires a fee pull their information from various local and governmental databases. These sites charge anywhere from $.99 for a single email lookup to upwards of $150 a month. Prior to joining one of these sites, be sure to check if they offer coupon codes or other various discounts. One of the best promotions running right now is 40% Off Any Background Check at Intelius. Intelius allows you to search for many different things, including first and last name, email address, drivers license and social security numbers. Intelius offers a 7 day free trial to their services.
For people who are members of an online dating service (especially women over the age of 35), learning how to play it safe while online is a must. Over the past 12 months, I have spoken with many women over the age of 40 who have been the target of scammers in any given online dating service. These scammers see women above the age of 40 as easy targets and if you aren’t aware of what to look out for, they can take your money or worse. I’m not trying to paint a doomsday scenario here, just giving out best practices advice. True, most of the guys/girls that you meet in any given online dating service probably have 110% good intentions…it’s just the .01% that are out there looking for easy prey.
Even if you aren’t worried about being scammed….how do you know that the guy you are talking to online doesn’t have a criminal history or a history of domestic abuse or worse? If you are serious about dating someone you met in an online dating service, it would do you well to check the current and past court records and run some sort of background search on your potential date, prior to things progressing.
