Are you a close-minded bigot?

Most people in life would answer that question with an emphatic NO. But when it comes to online dating and selecting the criteria for your potential dates, do you exclude people outside of your race? If so, why? Some people might say that they aren’t comfortable dating someone outside of their race due to cultural differences, while others would say that they just aren’t physically attracted to people of another race. Still others would give no reason at all.

According to a recent study by UCI (Universiity of Irvine, California) race played a huge factor (for white people) when it came to selecting a potential mate in an online dating site. The study was performed on the Yahoo! Personals online dating website and found the following conclusions:

- White men were more likely to exclude Black women as potential dates, and include women of Hispanic and Asian descent.
- White women were more likely to exclude Asian men as potential dates.
- White men were most often preferred by women of another race.
- White women were less likely to respond to advances from an Asian man, than they would a man of Black or Hispanic ethnicity.
- White men were the overall preference for women of all races.
- Almost 1 out of 2 White women only wanted to date a White man.
- 3 out of 5 White men selected a racial preference and half of those selected an Asian women and only 7% selected a Black woman.

Some of the biases that were found in the study included:

- Asian men are asexual and not masculine enough.
- Black women are bossy
- White women are status-oriented (and “stuck up bitches”)
- Asian women are hyper feminine and sex maniacs in the bedroom

These findings were based upon a survey of 6000 White men and women (ages 18-50) throughout major cities in the United States.

I have been involved with the online dating sites for well over 10 years and have two more (non-scientific) observations that I have seen pop up more than a few times:

- When it comes to selecting a date of the same race, some White people will look to see their potential dates racial preferences. If a White woman lists that she is open to dating a Black man, some White men will look at this as a “deal breaker”.

- If a White male lists his dating preferences as “Whites only” some White women will see them as being close-minded and refuse to communicate with them.

What are your guys experiences like? Are White people being racist or bigoted by selecting to date members of their own race only? What steps could people take to overcome their pre-conceived notions about race and dating?

What are your guys experiences like? Are White people being racist or bigoted by selecting to date members of their own race only? What steps could people take to overcome their pre-conceived notions about race and dating? Or despite the fact that we are living in the year 2010, will these dating preferences continue for thousands of years to come? (I’m not just talking about White people with regards to that last question. I’m talking about all people of all races).

Here, I will start: I have a white friend. He is 34 years old. He primarily likes to date blond (White) females. He would rather not date a Black nor Hispanic female, but he finds Indian (from the country India) women to be “extremely sexy” and has dated a few in years prior. Are his views bigoted because he generally only dates White women and would rather not date a Black/Hispanic female but would date a girl from Indian heritage?

About 5 years ago at my last job, I worked with a tall, skinny, fairly attractive Hispanic girl who was born in the US. She told me that she was primarily attracted to White men and was frustrated because whenever she went out to the bars in Hermosa Beach and tried to approach a White guy, she would be shot down almost immediately.

/Discuss

Here’s a Pro Tip for all you online daters out there: In addition to having multiple, clear pictures of yourself on your online dating profile, consider setting up a Linkedin/Facebook page as well.

I am probably the only person on the face of the planet who does not have a Facebook account. Frankly, I find it to be a complete waste of time. About 6 years ago, I had a Myspace page and found myself logging onto it more than I should at work. I spent on average 1 hour a day messing around with Myspace. Be that as it may, there are millions of other people who don’t share my viewpoints on these social sites and utilize these sites on a daily basis. I read a study that showed that the internet search traffic was being dominated by such sites as Twitter, Facebook (and to some lesser degree, Myspace).

So what does having a Facebook/Linkedin page have to do with increasing your chances of success in your online dating endeavors?

It gives the other person whom you are talking to a chance to get to know you a little better. With privacy as it is in this day and age, anyone can create an online dating profile. While maybe only 1 or 2 people out of 1000 would lie on their profile, people (especially women) are a bit wary of furthering communication with someone who has a limited profile to look at. With a Facebook/Linkedin/etc page up, your potential date might be more apt to agree to meet you in real life (after they can get a brief glimpse into your lifestyle by checking your pages out).

If you are considering going out on a date with someone you met in an online dating site, you probably already know to Google their email address, screen name and any other tidbits of information you can get out of them. Most of the time it will produce nothing more than their eBay feedback or perhaps their likes and dislikes with regards to music and movies. Other times it can produce information that might raise a red flag. A friend of mine met a guy in an online dating site. They chatted via email for about a week then made plans to meet up. Prior to going out on the date with the guy, she plugged his email address into Google: guysemailaddress@gmail.com. Nothing of much interest was found. Then she just took the part of his email address (before the “@gmail.com, which in this example is “guysemailaddress”) and popped it into Google. Apparently this guy was a member of a sex forum and he had made more than a few posts explaining his particular fetishes in life. That was all she needed to cancel the date with the guy and never talk to him again.

It’s a pretty safe bet that your potential date will Google any information they have on you prior to going out on a date. It’s not that they are nosey, but rather you are a stranger and they are only trying to protect themselves (and rightfully so). So give them something to Google about. Create a Facebook page. There are a good percentage of people out there who have a Facebook page and are over the age of 30. Facebook just isn’t for the teeny boppers anymore. If you still find the whole Facebook thing to be a bit much, then create a Linkedin profile. Linkedin is a business networking site, kind of like Facebook, but without all the advertisements/sensationalistic content. Even if your potential date doesn’t know how to Google your personal information (or is a bit new to online dating), you can always send them your Facebook/Linkedin address so they can get to know you a little better. Just be sure that you don’t post any risque pictures or make any questionable comments/posts as that will be visible as well.

There is a growing movement amongst females over the age of 30 who are particularly concerned about online dating safety. If you have nothing to hide, then why not show a little bit more about yourself online? You don’t have to include your life story, but put up a few pictures of your last vacation, add some of your friends on Facebook or make a list of your favorite movies. Anything to show that you are a live human being of interest, and not some scammer/weirdo/pervert who is just out for a one night stand.

A recent study came out from the University of Kansas that suggested that men who are more apt to tell the truth (25 year old guy making 90k a year?) come from the online dating sites that are geared more towards relationships like eharmony.com and Chemistry.com.

Professor Jeffrey Hall of the University of Kansas found that out of the 5000 users of an undisclosed online dating site, most responded that they tell the truth in their profiles. The ones who reported that they lied are generally the “people pleaser” types. These types of people can quickly figure out what other people like and use that to their advantage to gain social acceptance and in more extreme cases, manipulate others.

According to the study, men indicated that they were more willing to lie than women were in cases of finance, education and looks. The women who reported that they would be willing to lie, almost always did so about their weight. The same types of people that lied online were also the types that would do it face to face. Professor Hall indicated that for the “high end” online dating sites, people generally tended to lie less because they were anticipating an in person meeting and knew that the lie(s) would come out almost immediately.

Going off of personal experience, I find that people who only have 1 picture of themselves up on their online dating profile (usually taken at a weird or extreme angle) are more apt to be lying about something, or not disclosing the entire truth. Whenever I meet someone new in an online dating site (outside of eHarmony and/or Chemistry.com) I do a 3 step process prior to even considering meeting them for a date in real life:

1. Lengthy email exchange.

In this day and age, we tend to keep our communications short and sweet. With online dating, you have to realize you are getting to know a random stranger. True they may be one a total hottie, but you need to investigate further. I keep my email exchanges to about 4-5 times back and forth.

2. Instant message communication.

If no red flags pop up on the email exchange, I suggest we then take it to Yahoo Instant Messenger or AOL chat. Both chat messengers offer free downloads of their chat services and it costs nothing to use them. Since I work long hours, I usually pick 9pm on a Saturday night to meet up for a chat.

3. Phone call.

Not everyone likes to chit chat over the phone, but a phone call is a MUST prior to meeting someone in real life. If they fooled you via their personality profile, and they fooled you via the email and they fooled you via the instant message…..unless they are a sociopathic crazy, the “phone” will reveal a good deal about what their intentions are. You can tell a lot about a person from the way they talk, and the subtle inflictions in the tone of their voices.

Even after all of the above has been accomplished, and I’m somewhat satisfied I’m not going to be meeting Charles Manson at the local coffee shop for a date….I still keep my guard up for the first few dates.

What about you guys? Have any one of you ever been lied to, or caught one of your potential dates in a lie?

I just wanted to give a small tip to the women out there who find themselves attracting men who only want sex and not a relationship:

If you are looking for a quality relationship, you have to lower your standards and stop being so shallow.

Now I realize that not all women are like this. There are however a good portion of women out there (online dating sites, anyone?) who would rather date a mindless hunk, than a guy that has a lot of things in common with her and has act together in life. Women like this then wind up complaining to their girlfriends how a good man is hard to find.

The problem here (from a guy’s perspective) is very simple:

You have a “cute” (but not “hot”) looking girl who is trying to date out of her league. Most “hot” guys out there can pretty much get any girl they want….so what makes you think you are so special? Shallowness is a two way street, and once the hunk gets tired of you or a prettier and much skinnier girl comes along…..he’s out the front door in a heartbeat. These types of guys are only after one thing. You might be lucky enough to shackle them down for a few months (even luckier if you make a year) but when he walks out on you for no reason at all, you have just been burned by the game you have been playing.

If a girl is so shallow that she bases her dating choices solely upon looks….then chances are a dead skunk in the middle of the road has a better personality than she does.

So to all the “cute” (but not “Perfect 10″) women out there who are tired of meeting guys who only want sex, LOWER YOUR STANDARDS. This doesn’t mean walk down to your local homeless shelter and start dating. Does the guy HAVE to have a 6 pack? Does he HAVE to have huge muscles? Does your ideal man HAVE to have the perfect body? Chances are an emphatic “no”. Now for women who are in their early 20’s, this may not hold as much weight as it does for women who are in the late 20’s to mid 30’s. If you haven’t noticed lately, by the time you hit 30, your looks aren’t getting any hotter. The older you get, the less successful you will be at playing the “I’m waiting for my Brad Pitt hunk to carry me off on his white horse” game. Chances are that once you hit 35, you will be scrambling to find anything out there that is willing to even look at you.

If you simply cannot get past the way a guy looks, try dating men who are on the same “level” of attractiveness that you are. Then out of those guys, pick the one whom you have the most in common with.

Otherwise, enjoy being a life-time member of the online dating services.

I have been dumped. I am not proud of that fact and quite honestly, it makes me very sad. But now in retrospect, I should have seen it coming. In the last four months, I have gained weight. I have put on about 20 lbs. I was very unhappy at work and I ate to soothe my pain. It didn’t work. The heavier I got, the more I ate. I also started checking out of my relationship. Figuring that my boyfriend of five years would always be with me no matter what, I retreated into myself and did not let him in.

I stopped wanting to go out because my clothes did not fit me. I stopped wanting to have sex because I was embarrassed about how I looked with my clothes off. I stopped being happy with myself and with him. I thought everything would get better in time but it did not. I see now that I did all of the wrong things. I am not saying that my boyfriend was right to break up with me but I can objectively look back and take responsibility for my part in letting our relationship crumble.

Obviously, just because you gain weight, your man should not leave. Agreed. One hundred percent, I concur. But, and this is a big one, it is all of the other junk that goes along with the gaining weight, that will take a toll on your relationship that you need to take responsibility for and you need to change or else your guy will be looking elsewhere.

I was at dinner the other night with my girlfriends. We were talking about what women can do if they have gained weight to make sure they keep their man. It is unhealthy to crash diet and expect to lose 20 lbs in a week. So if you have gained weight and you want to stay in your relationship, here are some realistic things that we have come up with that will keep your other half by your side through thick and thin.

-Exercise. Start by exercising. Walk, run, bike, whatever. Just make sure you break a sweat everyday. In fact, invite your sweetie along. Go play basketball with your man. Do a workout video together. Go for a walk in a park and hold his hand. This is a great way to bond and spend quality time together. Not only will this help you to lose weight but it will make you feel better because your body releases endorphins when you are burning calories. So exercise makes you look great and feel great. This is a no brainer.

-Diet. Watch what you eat. Yeah, yeah. I know. No one likes to hear this but you can do it. I’m not talking a drastic crash diet. All you have to do is start eating less and eating healthier. Pick up a loaf of whole grain bread versus white. Make a healthy pizza at home instead of picking up a greasy one from some chain restaurant. Baby steps. It will go along way.

While the whole “diet and exercising” thing is going on….that’s going to take a few weeks, maybe a few months. If you think your relationship is in serious trouble, here are a few ways to keep your boyfriend occupied mentally while you are busy getting your behind in shape (to take his mind off your weight and onto other things):

-Show Appreciation. Make your man feel like the only guy around. Compliment him. Touch him. Tell him how much you appreciate him. It has been proven that a guy does not cheat on someone because he finds a hotter girl. He cheats because he doesn’t feel appreciated. So girls, nip this in the bud right away. Let your man know he is hot, sexy and you are so very lucky to have him.

-Do “the thing”. Every girl out there knows that there is something that your man really wants you to do. Most of the time this involves something in the bedroom. Use your imagination. Think about something he is always begging you for and as Nike says, “Just do it”. It will make his day. Hell, it will probably make his month. Show him that you are the girl that he should stay with because you can give him what he wants. You’ll be irreplaceable.

-Be Happy. No one is happy all of the time but you can be happy 95% of the time. How do you do this? Look on the bright side. Find things that make you happy. People love to be around positive people. Think about when you were first dating. Were you a Negative Nelly? I bet you weren’t. That is the girl that he feel in love with so be that girl again. Show him that you are a happy, fun person that he would be a fool to give up.

-Dress Sexy. I know that sweatpants are comfy. And, you personally, may like granny undies. But I assure you that your man does not. Dress to impress. Dress sexy. The sexier you dress the sexier you will feel. Greet him at the door with thigh highs, heels and nothing else. You will blow his mind. Go out to dinner with him and dress up so that he is proud to show you off. Highlight your assets. Even if you don’t feel sexy, dress like you do. Once you see his eyes bulging out of his head, you will feel your sexy vixen start to come out.

-Don’t Criticize. This one is just common sense. If you have put on some pounds and he is letting it slide, then please do the same to him. Do not give him grief about the dishes he leaves in the sink. Look the other way when he leaves his clothes on the floor. I’m not saying that you have to do this forever but right now is not the time to make him feel bad or give him any reason to want to run away from you. Plus, when you start making him happy, he is going to want to make you happy, too.

-Talk Dirty. A little dirty talking goes a long way. This is really exciting for guys. They feel like they have died and gone to their own heaven. You will instantly be 100 times more attractive to them because you are their fantasy come to life (that they don’t have to pay for). Send dirty texts, leave naughty messages, and trust me, you will be the girl of their dreams.

Some of these tips are just temporary fixes. Kinda like if you break a nail before a date and you run to get the superglue so it will stay on for the night. It is not permanent, but it will do in a pinch. So before you can lose the weight you want to, follow the above tricks.

I hope this advice will help you to stay happy in your relationships and hold onto your man. He will love you, if you love yourself. Make him feel like he is king of your world and he will want to stay put. You have more power than you know. You are beautiful and deserve to be loved. Give and you shall receive. Now go find your man, do “the thing” right now and you can thank me for it afterwards.

Over the past 4 years I have been running OnlineDatingMatches.com I have been asked the following question by many people:

“Which online dating site should I join?”

To which I simply replied: “What are you looking for?”

Each of the major online dating sites out there caters to a specific group of people, generally speaking. Each of the sites also has its pros and cons. Prior to writing this post, I did a little research online. I tried to find a website that basically explained what each online dating site was about, and what kinds of people joined. I found plenty of reviews of the online dating sites, but nobody really said which site is for who. I then asked a few of my readers to share their experiences (both good and bad) and surprisingly enough they were similar to my personal experiences.

Below you will find a general (can’t stress that enough) guideline as to what online dating site you should join, based upon what/whom you are looking for:

eHarmony.com

eHarmony is widely considered a “high end” online dating site. You aren’t going to find many people on eHarmony who are looking for 1 night stands. We have all seen the eHarmony commercials run 24/7, adnauseum. eHarmony is pretty much like what their commercials look like. People coming together, looking for the love of their life or something close. In comparison to the other online dating sites, eHarmony does cost a little bit more money. The way I (and a few other people who have had success on eHarmony) see it, it weeds out those who aren’t seriously looking for love. On the other hand, what if you are looking for love, but just can’t afford it due to the economy/etc. eHarmony offers promotional code which will allow you to save money on your monthly membership.

Chemistry.com:

The “eHarmony alternative”. Chemistry.com is run by Match.com and is another high end online dating site. The basic premise is similar to eHarmony: prior to joining you will need to complete an in-depth questionnaire which will then be used by Chemistry to match you with the person whom you are most compatible with. The main difference between the two is that Chemistry also allows for gays and lesbians to use their service as well. You can also browse profiles, wherein eHarmony you cannot. Is Chemistry.com better than eHarmony or vice versa? I have heard good things and bad things from people who have joined both sites. It’s kinda like comparing a Mercedes Benz to a BMW. The only thing they really have in common is that they cater to people who are looking for the best. Chemistry.com has a 7 day free trial offer for those who are on the fence.

Match.com:

If I could take the wildest party bar in Los Angeles and somehow turn it into a website, I would have created Match.com. Ok, so not everyone on Match.com is a party animal, but that’s the feeling that I get. Match.com is more “light and breezy” than eHarmony and Chemistry. Sure, there are people on Match who are looking to find Mr. or Mrs. Right….just as there are people on Match who are looking for Mr. or Mrs. “Right Now”. I have also noticed that the more skin you show on Match, the more responses you will get. Simply put, Match.com is the quintessential online dating site. It has been around forever and a day (and many people have gotten married who met on Match) and will continue to do so for many years to come. If you aren’t looking for your soulmate and are just looking to date to “see what might happen”, then I would advise you to join Match.com.

Yahoo Personals:

Same as Match.com. With one big caveat: I have met my last 3 girlfriends off of Yahoo Personals. To me (a single 30 year old guy) it seems that the women that I find on Yahoo are a lot less “flakey” than on other sites. The only negative about Yahoo Personals is that they need a new site interface update. The site looks like it hasn’t been updated in a while. But why mess with perfection? Yahoo Personals offers a 7 day free trial to their services, of which is more than enough to browse the profiles and see if something/someone catches your eye.

Plenty of Fish/Singlesnet.com:

The free online dating sites. A step up from picking up chicks on Myspace, a step down from an actual paying online dating site. There really isn’t much I can say about these free online dating sites, other than “you get what you pay for”.

The folks over at <a href="http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/2010/01/20/the-4-big-myths-of-profile-pictures/"target="_blank">OKCupid recently came out with a study about profile pictures on online dating sites. They cataloged over 7000 pictures and analyzed them on 3 different subjects: Facial attitude, context of picture and how much skin (was showing). Sure enough some interesting revelations came about. I wanted to share with you guys some highlights of their study and expand upon a few of them.

Facial expression(s): The most obvious (and not so surprising) revelation was that people who smiled in their pictures were more successful in getting responses to their online dating emails than people who didn’t smile. This goes for guys especially. When women see a guy’s picture for the first time on an online dating site, it can be hard at times to really tell what that person looks like. Women tend to want to see if they can pick out the guys personality from the pictures he has of himself. If the photos you have of yourself online look like they were painted by a painter in the Renaissance period (think back to your art school class in college. Remember how paintings of the 1500’s showed people that looked like they were in the last stage of rigor mortis?) then you really are doing yourself a disservice. You want to give yourself every single advantage possible, and chances are if the girl has to choose between you (and your Lurch from the Adams Family pose) and another guy who has a bright cheerful smile on his face….guess who is going to get the email response?

Context of picture: Generally speaking, you want to have at least 5-6 photos of yourself that are clear and easy to view. The study showed that the “Myspace shot” (wherein the person holds their cell phone camera above their head and takes a self-shot) surprisingly works really well for women. On average, they got almost 15 more new contacts every month than women who didn’t have a “Myspace” photo of themselves. Photos of women in bed (surprise, surprise) and outdoorsy type pics garnered the 2nd and 3rd most highly responses. Rounding up the bottom were pictures of girls at a bar, with animals and “doing something interesting”.

Guys don’t want to see pictures of you and 20 of your closets bar slut friends downing another shot of Jose Cuervo at the bar. As my good Pakistani friend who owns a 7-11 once said: “This is not to be good business, my friend”. Same goes for pictures of animals and “doing somthing interesting”. The best way to attract a guy is to have a wide range of photos. The more mysterious, the better. Just don’t go all Emo/Goth in your pics.

Interestingly enough, when it came to the guys and which photos got the most responses the top 3 were: With an animal, Showing muscles and “doing something interesting”. As expected, “drinking” came in second to last.

Showing off some skin: If you are a guy and you got the abs/muscles to show off, by all means do so. Use your strengths to your advantage. Same goes for cleavage shots for the ladies as sex sells. The study showed that with age, the skin shots decrease sharply, which is not so surprising after all. A 19 year old man will do a lot better showing off his body than a 31 year old man. Hrmm….it’s almost as if women around the age of 30 tend to look for something more than a guy with a hot body. The study showed that the kinds of messages (that lead to a successful response) that the cleavage showers got were not directed at the cleavage shots themselves. They cleavage showers who also had a “doing something interesting” photo received more responses because a guy could comment on that photo. An opening email of “Nice tits” from a guy really isn’t going to lead anywhere.

Taking this case study one step further, I would now like to address both women and men with regards to their online dating photos. Here are a few tips (from personal experience as well as anecdotal stories over the years) that can help you achieve a better response ratio on your online dating profile:

Men:

Smile. As in real life, women tend to be a bit cautious on the online dating sites. They don’t know who is a stalker/rapist/crazy person and chances are if your photos give off a creepy aura you won’t get any responses. Light and breezy, bright and cheerful. Don’t upload any pics of you downing a 40oz. of Olde English at a house party. Don’t upload pics of you surrounded by other smiling happy females (“player”). Don’t upload weird or random photos. In short, ask yourself “Why am I uploading this photo and what indication could it give off to a female?” Some women tend to be quick to judgment and a seemingly innocuous photo of you drinking a beer with your buddy on the top of the Palms Hotel Casino in Vegas could set off a whole host of red flags in a girls mind. If you want to be successful in an online dating site, here are 5 good photos that you should have uploaded of yourself:

1. Clear face shot in color. No black and white, no side views.
2. If you got the body and are under 35 years of age: shirtless pic (headless will also work). If you are lacking in the muscle department, try putting on a wife beater. It will accentuate your arms and shoulders.
3. “Doing something interesting”. I am a licensed pilot (for fun). On my picture page, I put an action pic of me doing a pre-flight check on a Cessna airplane. I was crouching under the wing taking a sample of the fuel inside. Head was cocked as if I was intently studying the fuel level. You won’t believe how many responses I got to that photo. If you aren’t a licensed pilot, you can always pay $100 for a “free lesson” and get your buddy to take a picture of you doing the same.
4. Picture of you with an animal. Don’t have a cute fluffy puppy? Go to your local pet store and ask the clerk to take a photo of you holding a puppy. Tell them that “it’s to show my girlfriend in order to convince her to let me get one” or some other b.s. story. Back in the day when I was on another online dating site (yes, I am a “lifer” when it comes to online dating) I had a picture of me and my pitbull. She was half lab so she didn’t look too scary. Again, 1 out of every 2 responses I got included a comment about my puppy.
5. A “head to toe” photo of yourself so women can see what the entire package looks like (not “that” package). Don’t crotch-stuff. That’s just tacky.

Women:

1. Show those ta-ta’s if you got ‘em ! Even if you don’t, show some form of cleavage. The point here is not to have your boobs take up the entire photo, but rather give off a sexy allure, however diminished. Take a very tasteful photo of yourself, and don’t make your cleavage the center piece, but be sure to include them. A tasteful photo showing a very slight cleavage shot can be extremely powerful. Guys won’t think you are just trying to show off your goods, but rather they will see you in a great pic and your cleavage as an afterthought.
2. No weird photos. Unless you are an artsy-fartsy kinda gal and are looking for the same in a guy…..leave the picture of you cupping the stone balls of Michealangelo’s David sculpture on your hard drive. I’m going to have to say that I disagree with the OKC study that shows women with pictures of themselves “doing something interesting” doesn’t get many responses. I have always advised women to put up 1 picture of themselves doing a hobby or interest of theirs. For example: If you are into running/cross training, throw up a pic of you in the last marathon you ran. The reason is simple. If you are looking for a guy with similar interests, what better way to attract him than a photo of you doing the same?
3. No drinky-drinky, smokey-smokey photos. Even though you may be best friends with Snoop Dogg, it probably would be best to not upload the pic of you and him puffing on a Philly Blunt while driving in his ‘64 low-low on the way to the Compton Swap Meet. Unless a guy is specifically looking for a slut….don’t give him any reason to jump to wild conclusions.
4. Myspace shot. Get one up there ASAP. Grab your cell phone, walk into the bathroom, hold it above your head and take a pic. I think the reason why this picture works so well is that it gives off a mysterious amateur type of allure. Since most guys nowadays are familiar with Myspace (and practically live their lives on it), it makes good sense to include a picture of this nature.
5. No animal pictures. More specifically, no “crazy cat lady” pictures. Sure, you may love your Mr. Fluffy-Foo, but guys have a thing about women and cats. This is based on experience, and most of my guy friends have at least 1 story of some crazy chick they dated who had more than 1 cat. Every single girl that I have dated (3 to be exact) that has had more than one cat has turned out to be a complete psychotic bitch. This isn’t a generalization statement, just an old wives tale.

Here’s a quick little dating tip for you guys for the New Year: Don’t date while you are mentally depressed.

I’m not talking about a clinical depression, but rather depression in the sense when you are down in a funk and all signs point to a nice little Pity Party going on inside your head. Dating other people requires you to give all of yourself to that person. When you are depressed you are only thinking about yourself. As such you are not able to give 100% of your efforts to getting to know the person you are dating.

You will most likely wind up making matters far worse as the relationship will most likely end and you will be in the same exact spot that you were when you started. Concentrate first on taking care of yourself and fixing whatever it is that needs to be fixed in your mind.

If you absolutely have to date someone your best bet is to take things extremely slow. Let the other person know that you are not mentally ready for a relationship and you need your space and time. If you are lucky enough to pull out of the funk depression while you are still dating them, then you can start to look beyond the casual dating aspect.

Relationship and Breakup Counselor JoyW is back with us to give her stream-of-consciousness thoughts on why women are more attracted to funny guys (and why you don’t have to look like Brad Pitt in order to attract hot women)

Why Women Like Funny Guys

Everyone loves to laugh. We all love that guttural response. It feels good to laugh. It has scientifically been proven that laughing can improve your immune system. So go out and rent a comedy. Or you can find yourself a funny mate. That is why one of the top things women are always looking for is a guy that can make her laugh. Women like funny men.

Think about all of the not so cute, but really funny, guys you know that have beautiful girlfriends or wives. It is because laughter makes you feel good. And a guy that can constantly make you feel good by laughing is a guy you want to be with. If you are always laughing, you don’t have time to think about the fact that this guy does not look like Brad Pitt-or anywhere close. And even if you do think about it, you don’t care.

When I am with a guy that I am laughing so hard my sides hurt, I know I am doing well. Laughter can get you through a lot. Looks will fade over the years, but a great sense of humor is something that will last. I have spoken with a lot of happily married couples and almost all of them have said to me that he reason their marriage is working is because they make each other laugh everyday.

So how does a guy get funny? Well, most are just born that way. But you can always brush up on your humor. By watching TV and movies that are comedies, that will help you learn some lessons in timing and how to land a joke (and if you are ballsy enough, you can pull some of their material and use it on a woman-just be prepared, if you get caught, with a great comeback line). Take an improvisation class. An improvisation class will teach you how to give a performance without planning or preparation. Yes, mostly actors do this, but non-actors can learn a lot from a class, too. Improv is a wonderful art form that forces you to be quick on your feet. This can really be helpful on dates. And last, but not least, don’t take yourself too seriously. Learn to laugh at yourself.

Even after all of this, if you still don’t find yourself funny. Ask your friends to help. Ask them truthfully if they find you funny. If not, why. Do they have any suggestions? Are you too serious? Are you worried all of the time about the sky falling? Do you need to lighten up? Make sure you listen and keep an open mind when you have asked your friends for help. They may tell you things you do not want to hear. But this is the only way to learn how you are perceived by others. Thank them and think about what they have said. Do some soul searching and get counseling, if needed, if there are things you are just deeply unhappy about that you cannot let go. But make it a goal to find humor in all situations.

No one likes a grumpy Gus. We like people who are happy and fun and full of laughter. We can all be that way. We can learn to look at the funny side of life. Include people in your life that you find funny. Seek out ways to expand your sense of humor. Make a date to see a comedian (just sit in the back, trust me) and really study why he or she is funny. Learning to laugh, let loose and have fun will service you so very well in your life. Life is short, laugh a lot.

Bars….a good place to pick up women?

I get asked a lot by my guy friends if they should continue to head to the bars to look for women. I shout, “Definitely”. I know, that some may think, it is not the ideal place to pick up on a girl that you want to bring home to mom but it can be. Bars are there, mostly, as a pick up joint. Yeah, once and awhile a couple will head there to just hang out and secretly relive their single days but for the most part bars are just crawling with single people. You have about a 95% chance (statistics that I made up on the fly) that if a girl is there, she is single. Again, there are exceptions such as a taken girl who is there to hang out with her girls (and again relive her single days) but really, you have a pretty good shot that she is looking for a man.

Who among us has not gone to a bar? So there are normal people that go to bars. It sounds shady to have met your “true love” at Joe’s Pub but why? If we have all been to bars (some of us more than others), then why shouldn’t we look for love here. Yes, there are some people that are just looking to get drunk and hook up (score, if there is a girl there you like and this is her mission) but I’d actually say that those people are the exception, not the rule. We want to find a mate (most of us) and going to a place that is stocked like a fish farm with exactly what we are looking for is a perfect place to look for a soul mate.

I know, I am going to have many a critic over my admiration for bars as the place to find “the one”. But again, why? Because of the alcohol? You’ll say, the spirits are there just to loosen everyone up to hop in the sack and not to just grease a well made match. Well, let’s say you meet a nice girl at a wedding. Don’t most weddings serve liquor? Yep. So there goes that theory. Another critic might say, women wear almost nothing at a bar and yet you are supposed to marry this girl and bring her to your company picnics? Well, how about the beach? If you met a girl on the beach then she would be wearing much less. See, bars get a bad rap, but really they are one of the most ideal places to meet your partner.

I also think a lot more people have met their significant others at a bar but they are just not copping to the fact. They will make up a well played out story to tell their friends and relatives, just so that they do not have to admit they met at a bar. Some people act as if meeting your girlfriend at a bar was like meeting her at a strip club or something. Bars are not such a bad place. But for some reason, they just sound bad. It may not sound like a typical fairytale to admit to meeting your future wife at a bar but it should be. I am standing up for bars everywhere and telling you to belly up to the local pub and go look for love. And when you find your perfect mate, shout it from the rooftop. Let the world know. We can start a revolution.

Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox, but I hope, you get it. You can meet nice, normal women almost anywhere. But nice, normal, single women are almost guaranteed at a place made for singles-a bar. This is a prime spot for you to meet a woman looking for the same thing you are-love. So make sure you are acting like it if you are at the bar looking for your true love. Don’t act like a guy trying to get laid. Act like a gentleman, be sincere and keep your eyes and heart open. You don’t want to miss your Bella (shout out to Twilight fans) while you are just looking for a quick roll in the hay because you think could never find a nice girl at a bar. You never know who you’ll meet, and where. It might just surprise you.

The “girlfriend” Title

Isn’t it funny how a label can mean so much to someone, especially to women. Most men don’t care what you call them as long as you are putting out. But women, we need a title. We like “girlfriend”, “fiancé” and “wife”. We feel better when we have a title. We feel like we belong. It means something to us. We know that it is hard for men to hand out titles, so when we get one, we feel like it really does mean something. We share it with all of our friends, “I am now “officially” Billy’s girlfriend”!! And we are so proud. It is like a mini-celebration.

I know that it is not the same for guys. I know that giving “the title” means that they are ready to commit but it is not the same for them. They do not need it, like we do. They are not getting high-fives from their friends when they have officially titled their girl. In fact, most of their friends, will give them hell about it because “who wants a girlfriend”, “be single”, “enjoy life”. The guys that are usually saying that are in relationships and are unhappy or single guys that don’t want to lose one of their friends to “the dark side”.

A title can be a good thing, for both parties involved. When you are with the right person and you want to just be with that one person, a title is needed. If you are just hanging out and you can date whomever you please, and visa versa, then you can just call her by her first name when you introduce her. But be aware, as soon as you introduce her like that to another guy, he knows that she is fair game. If you say, “This is my girlfriend, Mary”, then all bets are off. So you get to decide, is she worth holding onto.

Having a girlfriend does have a lot of perks. You have a constant companion. You have someone who understands you. And, you know, when you are having a bad day, she’ll be there for you. The title girlfriend should not be a scary thing. If it is, then you need to re-assess your relationship or yourself.

What makes you not want to hand out a title? Is she not the one? Are you waiting for someone better? If so, you really need to make that quite clear to the other party involved. If you just want a casual relationship (read: friends with benefits), then you need to be fair to her and let her know. But be prepared. She may want more. And if she does and she leaves, how will you feel? Think long and hard about this before you have this talk.

Some guys (and a few, very few, girls) are not into titles. They like to keep things just fun and fancy free. And I think that is fine if both people feel the same way. But if you are just scared of kissing your single life goodbye because you decided to settle down then you need to rent Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. And if you meet the right girl, don’t let her slip away.

Is there an appropriate time for you to hand out the coveted girlfriend title? No. It needs to be when you feel like your relationship has moved on to the next stage and you want to see this girl exclusively. Then you do need to talk to her about being exclusive and see how she feels. If she feels the same, then great, she gets to throw her mini-celebration with her friends and you get a cool chick who is proud to be with you. If she is not ready for that step, and you are, then you may want to think about what you want in the long run. Are you willing to wait? Or do you need to find someone who is heading down the same path you are?

The “girlfriend title” can be a wonderful thing. It is not something to be scared of. It is something to be excited about. It means someone cares as much for you as you do for her. It means you are ready for the next step. So go on out there and give that girl that means so much to you her very own title, your girlfriend.

Dating sucks, but there IS light at the end of the tunnel

I used to hate dating. I really, really hated dating. To me it was just like a job interview. You spend hours getting ready, not to mention days before prepping for the event. If you are a girl, you get your hair cut, waxed, nails done and sometimes even shop for a new outfit. If you are a guy, you spend hours on the internet trying to find the perfect place to go, make reservations, get your outfit together and clean your car. Along with 500 other things that pop up in between all of this that you have to do for your date.

Then you go on your date. You sweat and stress and try to look cool under the pressure. You attempt to come up with funny things to say. You endeavor to laugh appropriately at your date’s jokes. You are constantly gauging the situation to see if your date thinks you are the most wonderful person alive. After it is all said and done, at the end of the night you have the awkward walk to the door, do I kiss or don’t I kiss, and is this where I ask for another date thought running through your head.

Ick. It is a wonder any of us go on dates. Why do we do it? Well, we are looking for the “one”. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs to get to your prince who is the “one”. I know it is torturous. Dating is not always fun. But falling in love is. Think of the last time you were in love. How great is that feeling? Pretty great, huh. It is what drives us as human beings. It is what many a war has been fought over. It makes great movies, great and great songs, timeless. And love is what that terrible thing “dating” leads to.

Think about it. What stories would you have to tell your kids and grandkids if you didn’t go on a few good and bad dates? You wouldn’t have any. And it is the journey, not the destination that makes life worth living. You just have to learn to start enjoying the journey. It can be fun. Sure, there will still be stress but there doesn’t have to be a dread about dating. You are going on a bunch of interviews but love is definitely not work. It takes work, yes. But it is not that job that we all hate. It is a wonderful thing. You get to experience magic when you fall in love. You get to experience meaning and pure bliss.

Doesn’t all of this love talk sound grand? That is why we all date. We are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. The person we are meant to be with that will see us through thick and thin. The person who will be our biggest cheerleader. The person who will be on our team. The person who will fight the good fight with us. We need a better half. We as humans need human interaction. And finding a soul mate is the best interaction of them all.

Dating=Love. There is no two ways about it. We have to go on dates to fall in love. And once you find the one that is meant to be yours, you love dating. You can’t wait to get dressed up and go out to eat. You love prepping and getting ready so that they continue to be attracted to you and so that they shower you with compliments. You are giddy and can’t wait for your good night kiss. And this great feeling is all thanks to dating.

You just have to turn your perspective around about dating. Don’t think of it like a chore and don’t bring your baggage from past bad dates or bad relationships to your date. You are starting anew. A clean slate. You are going out with this attractive person and you will start a journey tonight. I cannot tell you where it will lead but I can tell you to enjoy it. You just never know when you will be sitting across from your future soul mate that will take your life in a wonderful new direction.

<What confuses me about men

There are so many things that make me go hmmm about the opposite sex. Men are definitely a different species. But I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 reasons men make me utterly confused (and insane).

   1. Men say they will call. Oh, yes, we have all been there. A man will say he will call me and never does. What? Why bother telling me you will call when you know damn well, you won’t. Just don’t say anything. Or even better tell me you are married, a priest or gay and I’ll never think about you again. Or, at least, I won’t waste my weekend looking to see if you ring me up.

   2. Men think jeans, a clean shirt and closed toed shoes are dressing up. Really?? Really?? This is dressing up to you?? Women spend hours getting ready and choosing the perfect outfit and you just throw on a clean shirt (which probably means you have only worn it two times) and some shoes that aren’t sandals. Come on guys. Put a little effort into it. If you do, we’ll reciprocate and put a little effort in the bedroom for you.

    3. Men eat a lot and never worry about gaining weight. This astonishes me. The mere fact that you can shove a chili dog, fries and 10 beers down your throat and never moan about it going to your hips is amazing. But it also drives me crazy because we women are always calculating the amount of calories and the exact number of minutes we will have to run on the treadmill to burn it off for every single bite.

   4. Men like breasts, a lot. OK, I get this one-sort of. It is definitely built into the DNA code that all men like boobs. But the obsession?? That I don’t get. The constant drooling if a woman has breasts up to her eyeballs. You are men, not animals. Control that a little, ok. It’s fine to lust after our lady humps but please keep it in check.

    5. Men like fast cars. This one is really funny to me. Especially since I live in Los Angeles. With the traffic out here, you cannot get above 55 mph, if you are lucky. So why would you buy a car that can go from 0 to 300 mph in 60 seconds. It makes no sense. I guess if you lived in the middle of nowhere and you had lots of open roads then maybe this would be beneficial. But honestly, if you lived out in the middle of nowhere, where are you in a hurry to get to?

    6. Men leave laundry, food and anything else piled up for weeks and it never bothers them. Gross. Just gross. Clean up. If you need a maid, hire one. Even better, get off your lazy ass and do it yourself. Put things in their place. Clean the dishes and dust. It really doesn’t take that long. Throw out the trash. Your place will smell better. If you never want to attract another human being then keep living like this but if you are looking for a woman-clean up!!

    7. Men want women 10 years (or more) younger than they are. This one just really bugs me. I think some men have a mirror that has a distorted view when they glance at themselves. Kinda like a funhouse mirror but makes them 30 lbs lighter, 10 years younger and sexy enough to catch a hot younger woman’s eye. What’s wrong with women who are your own age? And please, gentlemen, let me tell you, there is only one Hugh Hefner out there and you are not him.

    8. Men can watch sports for days, weeks and years and never get bored. A good sports game is fine. I’m all for it. But 12 hours spent locked in the house with buffalo wings and pizza does not make a good Sunday for most women. Do us all a favor. Pick a game, pick a couple, then put the remote down and take us out for a fun day. If you do, you’ll be very happy with our brand of tackle later.

    9. Men very rarely talk about their feelings. Ah, that scary word, FEELINGS. It sends men into a state of shock. Your feelings are actually pretty easy. If I stuck your hand under hot water, your hand would feel HOT. If I stuck your hand under cold water, your hand would feel COLD. So if a woman asks you how you feel about her, just state the obvious. Do you like her?? Do you see this going further?? Are you happy with the relationship?? Pretty easy questions and answers. And if the answers are complicated, just tell us why. No need for us to stick your head in the oven to get an answer, right?

   10. Men think they are smarter than every woman alive. I could have gone to Yale, have 3 doctorate degrees and be a neurosurgeon and the average Joe will still think that he is smarter than I am. I think it is spelled out somewhere deep in their genetic code that they have to believe that they know more than women. They know everything. And if they don’t, they think that by watching a TV show or asking their neighbor, Bill, how something works automatically makes them an expert on it. Wrong! Yes, there are plenty of smart men out there but please, do every woman a favor by not assuming that you know it all and we don’t. We’ll just let you think you do, if you give us proper credit when we deserve it.

Should you sleep with a guy on the first date?

If you are thinking of hitting the sheets with a guy right after your first date-don’t! I repeat…This is a bad idea. You know your local bag guy at the corner grocery store better than you know this guy. Even if he has said all of the right things, you do not need to be bedding down with him. If you wait, it’ll be even better after the fourth date or the date after that. I don’t have a steadfast rule on how many dates you need to go on before you do sleep with a guy but it really needs to be at least after a few. Guys like the chase. If you give in right away, where’s the mystery? There isn’t any. And for great sex, you need to have a build up. There’s no build up if you are sleeping with him right away. You just come across as easy. It’s true. Go on; ask some of your guy friends. They’ll tell you the same thing.

A good way to avoid nooky on the first date is to avoid a lot of alcohol. I know, alcohol helps you to relax but too much and you’ll lose your inhibitions and your shirt by the end of night. And no one likes a sloppy drunk. Have just a couple of light drinks and drink water the rest of the night. Your head and you dignity will thank you the next day.

If you are worried about what the guy will say then be prepared with a response if he asks you about it. You can tell him that you are interested in him but you feel like in order for things to move forward, you will need to wait until the time is right. Tell him that you are sure that he can understand that because he has been such a gentleman all night long. If he pressures you, this should send up red flags that this is not the guy that you want to be with. You deserve better!

Sex does not equal love. And girls, just because you sleep with a guy this does not mean he is in love with you. It also does not mean that by sleeping with him, you’ll be able to make him fall in love with you. You are much smarter than that and you need to show him that there is more to you than what is between your legs. Sex, I repeat, does not equal love.

Think of it like this…If you wanted ice cream, right now, and you went out and bought some and ate it, then it would be good. But if you could not have the ice cream, then your desire for it will grow stronger and stronger as the days or weeks go on. And when you finally do taste that Chocolate Chip ice cream that you have been dreaming of it tastes amazing!

I don’t know any guy, worth dating, that doesn’t respect a girl for waiting awhile to sleep with him. It also shows him that you are not sleeping with just any guy that pays for your dinner. You will show him that if he treats you right and you two continue to have a good time together, then and only then, will he get some.

You deserve to value yourself and by “saving” yourself until you feel that the time is right, you will be doing just that. You will be making your relationship with this guy stronger by making him wait. You increase his desire and we all know that increased desire is a good thing. You are his Chocolate Chip ice cream with whip cream and cherries on top. I’m all for a good roll in the hay, just make sure that you are rolling around with the right cowboy.

Here are a few tips on how to close the deal with a girl. (I’m going to take a break from my traditional “top 10″ format and just author this post from a conscious stream of thought….ala “Puff Daddy” when singing backup on the old Biggy records. You know, when he goes “uggh, yeah, ha-haaaaaaw” every 2-3 seconds during the entire rap song.)

Last week I was at a local pub with one of my buddies. He met a girl and they seemed to hit it off really well. After a few hours I left (by myself) and figured he would call the next day telling me about how he scored with this pretty hot chick. About 2am, I get a phone call from him telling me that he wasn’t able to close the deal.

I kinda shook my head as I was certain that he was going to (at the very least) get this girls number. My buddy is not a shy guy and he has no problem striking up conversations with beautiful women. So much so, that I try to take a few lessons from him when we are out drinking together. In short: his social skills are about 10x that of any normal guy out there.

Being that my day job is coaching guys and girls on how to succeed in dating, I decided to research this a bit further. Turns out this little issue affects more guys that I knew about. They go out at night and meet a cute girl, chat her up for the entire night and aren’t able to close the deal. I was always under the impression that it should be the other way around…..how TO talk to a girl….once you have her attention, the rest just falls into place. So let’s take a minute here and go back to basics.

Availability

Sometimes guys make themselves too available to the women they are talking to. They agree on everything she says, and really don’t challenge her mentally. It’s not that the guys aren’t smart, but rather they let their defenses down for a minute thinking that this girl represents home base (and an easy score). Once you have a girls attention at a bar and find yourself talking to her for more than a few minutes, take a few to analyze the situation. What are you guys talking about exactly? Business? Pleasure? Her great Aunt Mary whose cats just had kittens? If you notice her starting to listen more than she speaks, this could be a sign that she isn’t being challenged enough.

Play hard to get….

Example (and true story): I met this smoking hot Polish girl a few years back. 5′10 blond/blue perfect body. In short, she was waaaay out of my league. Whatevers. I’m a “what you see is what you get” type of guy, so it really didn’t bother me. So on our second date, we went out to a club. Being the lush wino that I am, I set my sights on getting plastered in the first 15 minutes. Not because I was nervous…but dammit, I wanted to drink ! When I’m that drunk my fat mouth and quick wit start doing their own thing. It was enough to say that at that particular point in time, a shit I gave not. I knew this girl was a little bit out of my league and I honestly didn’t care. I was out to have fun with a smoking hot chick that night, period.

As the night drew on she invited me out on the dance floor. I got out there and started doing my thing. There were several other cute girls on the dance floor and I couldn’t help but stare at their breasts and rub up against their asses. The girls seemed to reciprocate so it was all good. The next thing I know the girl that I was with was physically pulling me away from the other girls so I would be dancing with her. This happened about 3-4 times before she finally dragged me off the dance floor and sat down in my lap on a barstool.

Needless to say, she became my girlfriend a few days later.

Psychologically speaking, what happened here was that I was dating a girl with semi-low self esteem. I don’t think she fully realized her value “on the market” and as such the act of me dancing with other girls whom she deemed “cuter than her” was enough to trigger a predatory response. Not all women are like that….but a good portion of them have low self esteem. Want to potentially get to first base that night? Make yourself less available by talking to other women. Don’t be a dick about it, do it with style/class and a smile on your face so that she doesn’t think you are being an ass on purpose. Your goal is to make her think that she is going to lose you to another girl who is cuter than her (in her mind). It’s kinda like playing a fish on the line….give it enough line and it will swim away. Pull hard and tight on the line and it will most likely break. You need to find the perfect balance so that she is thinking to herself:

“God, why does every guy I talk to always go for the girls who are cuter than I am?”

Throw in a few shots of vodka into her head….and you kind Sir, will be knee deep in the good stuff that night or at the very least get her phone number.

There are many “self help” websites out there that show you little tricks on how to pick up women. I’m going to skip over all of that stuff assuming that you either already know it (common sense) or aren’t buying into it. The little story that I just related is just one of many ways to “set the hook” and get the girl’s full undivided attention.

It’s 2am. The bar is closing and you are getting tired. If you are like most guys, the first words out of your mouth to that cute chick you have been talking to all night are probably somewhere along the lines of: “Hey, so why don’t we continue this conversation over at my place” or the ever-popular “Can I have your number”.

NO, NYET, NEIN, NAUGHT, NO !!

If you aren’t 100% certain that she will do what you ask….why set yourself up for failure?

For that entire 2-3 hours that you were talking to her, you should have been mentally and subconsciously laying the ground work for either

a. Taking her back to your place
b. Getting her phone number

If you find yourself talking to a girl you met at a bar for more than 30 minutes, you should have enough information about her to give her a reason to want to see you again. Did you have anything in common?

Save the whales?
Keen on Jesus?
Release the hounds?

There has to be at least some common ground you guys found during that conversation. Take said common ground and subtly use it to get her back to your place or her telephone number. I can think of a million reasons to ask a girl for her number. You should have gotten her number prior to the night ending. That way the pressure is off and your aren’t (in a drunken stupor) trying to figure out how to get her back to your place after last call.

Good luck, fellas ! dcvt2yexs8

The top 10 sexiest Halloween costumes for 2009

So since one of my favorite holidays is coming, I got to thinking about costumes. Every year, women everywhere start to workout a bit harder and eat a little less just so they can fit into their “sexy fill-in-the-blank” costume. And I got to thinking, which costumes are the sexiest. Now, mind you, there is a fine line between sexy and slutty. You want to show enough skin so that men are definitely drooling but not too much that someone offers you a hundred dollar bill to go with them into the backroom. So what are the best sexy Halloween costumes? Well, here is my list:

1. Sexy Little Red Riding Hood – What man could resist a little lost woman in a hot red outfit looking for her grandmother and turned on by wolves. No one. This is a surefire way to get men everywhere wishing they were lost in a forest with you and playing Mr. Sexy Wolf.

2. Sexy Alice in Wonderland - Oh, Alice. This is essence of what men think about when they think of pure and sweet and so sexy. They will want to hit the sheets with you just to see if you are like little Alice or more like a queen of hearts in the bedroom. This costume is sure to turn any man mad with delight!

3. Sexy Witch – It is Halloween after all. So what is Halloween without a sexy witch? It is like Christmas without Santa Claus. You are the star on Halloween night. Just don’t forget your broom to beat off any unwelcome guests.

4. Sexy Devil -Ah, the devil. Every reason a man wants to be bad. You can make a good boy turn to the dark side with this costume. It screams HOT-literally. You will be like a billboard that reads “Go on be, naughty.”

5. Sexy Cat Woman – The Black Leather Goddess. It conjures up great memories of Halle Berry that every man still has locked in his head. You get to be a badass with a whip and that, is purrrrrfect.

6. Sexy Cheerleader – This is a costume sure to please. What man hasn’t had a cheerleader fantasy? Come on. It has everything rolled up into one. The idea of sports, sex and a hot cheerleader. Include a cold beer and a man has definitely died and gone to heaven. Goooo Cheerleaders!!

7. Sexy Prep School Girl – Yes, the cute plaid skirt. School memories have sent men reeling for ages over the thought of this outfit. Then there are the wonderful memories of Britney hitting us one more time in it. You will move to the head of the class in this Halloween costume.

8. Sexy Little Bo Peep – Poor Little Bo Peep. She lost her sheep. Now what’s a girl to do? She needs to find a studly Sheep Farmer to go find them. And while he’s at it he will probably run into Sexy Little Miss Muffet. Where that goes from there is anyone’s guess…

9. Sexy Officer – No one likes to see the Law Enforcement come a knockin’ unless you are playing a sexy female cop in a very small costume. Then the guys will all beg to be handcuffed and put away by you. Make sure to read them their rights first and use force if necessary.

10. Sexy Nurse- Every man you meet will suddenly have a sore throat when you are doing your rounds. Watch out for their blood pressure when they see you in this costume. And for every good nurse out there, there is always some sexy doctor who is willing to give you a checkup, too.

If not listed, what’s your favorite sexy Halloween costume to wear at a party?

Guys, I’m going to give you $1500.00 worth of advice right now:

Read the below paragraph. If it sounds like something you would do, it’s probably in your best interests to pay close attention to the rest of this short article.

Close your eyes and think back to the last time you were at a bar on a Friday or Saturday night with a group of your guy friends. After the first couple rounds of drinks and your buddies started mixing and mingling with the lovely females that surrounded you, did you notice yourself starting to glance around the bar (perhaps nervously) looking to make eye contact with a cute chick in the high hopes she would reciprocate? When you made said eye contact, did she wink slyly at you, make the “come here, you big stud” motion with her finger or did she glance away withoutsomuch as even a smile?

As the night drew on, did you find yourself standing (or sitting) in the corner of the bar by yourself….grasping the bottle of beer in your hand and nervously sipping it…to the point where you started to notice how much you were drinking?

When you finally got enough liquid courage inside you and figured “it’s now or never” and walked over to a girl….did you actually know what the hell you were talking about when you were trying to spit some game to her? Was the (nervous) laughter that was coming out of her and her friends mouths laughing with you, or AT you?

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Here is the secret on how to talk to women if you are nervous or shy:

Practice, practice, practice. You can search the interenets far and wide and will not come up with better advice. Practice makes perfect, young padowan.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Let’s analyze the above bar scene and see just what you did wrong that night:

1. You went out to a bar, knowing full well that you are shy/nervous and “not too good at talking to the ladies”. You set yourself up for failure the second you walked out your front door with even the slightest hope that you would meet a girl that night.

2. You let your buddies leave you at the bar (to go talk to the women) by yourself. Women can smell desperation a mile away and even if some chick was looking for a pity f#@% that night, the sight of you by yourself…..looking like a deer caught in the headlights was cause enough to make her rethink her original plans of going home alone back to someone named B.O.B.

3. As you struck out alone you decided to get even drunker to mask your nervousness….not fully realized that it exacerbated it by about 150%.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

To save yourself from future failure, I would advise you to do the following:

When you go out to bars with your buddies, take some time to relax and realize that you probably aren’t going to get a girls number that night. Once you have the “anything goes” mental attitude, the battle is halfway won. This relaxed mindstate allows you to be you, and if by chance a female does strike up a conversation with you, you won’t be as nervous as you would have if you were expecting it.

Going back to my original statement: Practice, practice, practice. Here are 3 easy ways to get practice in talking to women:

1. Goto local coffee shops and pick a seat and sit. Don’t bring your laptop, don’t bring a book. Just park your ass in a chair and sit. Force yourself to sit even if it feels uncomfortable. If you are lucky, a girl might sit down next to you, but I wouldn’t expect it. If someone does strike up a conversation with you, go with the flow. The point of this exercise is to force yourself to stay in situations that you might deem “uncomfortable” or “awkward” due to the fact that you are surrounded by strangers and have no idea who might come by to talk to you. It is critically important that you de-program the “wall flower” out of your subconscious prior to moving on to step #2.

2. After a week or two of the coffee shop (or any public place) you are probably a bit more relaxed now being in public in social situations. Good, but you’ve got a long way to go. Join an online dating site. I would advise Match.com or Yahoo Personals. The reason being is that both dating sites are more casual than some of the higher end online dating sites (like eHarmony). Create a profile, using clear pictureS (plural) of yourself. When it comes time to write the “about me” part, just be honest. Now, start browsing your ass off at the females on the personals site and send at least 50 emails. Do it canned style. We are going for quantity, not quality here. Chances are that at least 1 female will write you back. It is now your mission to get her phone number and start chatting your little ass off over the phone.

Do this repeatedly with as many women as you can, then set up a few dates. After a while you will start noticing your confidence building ….so much so….that you don’t even think twice when it comes time to talking to a girl you have never met before in public. It is just second nature.

I used to work for a very small company that showed guys how to overcome shyness in public and give them the tools and abilities they needed to talk to women in real life. I used the exact same methods/techniques in real life for my clients. For the entire 1 month program, we charged $1500.00. Every single guy (about 40 of them) that I worked with came out a confident, new man.

So pretty much I just gave you a $1500 crash course in how to talk to women if you are shy or nervous. For free. It will take you about a month (give or take) to develop the necessary skills to be good enough to stand on your own when it comes time to talking to women. Feel free to leave a comment or question below and I will respond within a few hours (give or take).

I don’t know what else to do/say to help you out…? Does shock treatment work best for you?

Have you considered dating men, perhaps?

About a year ago I wrote an article about how/why women sometimes don’t call guys back after the first date. I would like to take that one step further and examine the reasons why women don’t call, period. Not calling after the first date is bad enough….but at least you have some indication as to why she didn’t call you back. You spent a few hours with her while out on your date and can go back to my original post and intelligently figure out why she didn’t call. Bad breath? Treated your waiter rudely? No chemistry? There could be any number of reasons, since after all she has been silently making mental notes about you from the minute you guys first met for your date.

What about those times when you get a girls number and call her and she never calls back? This type of situation has more to do with the short period of time you spent talking to her and getting her number. In other words, your game. These types of situations are much harder to figure out why she wasn’t interested (or gave you the same phone number that the last 3 girls gave you: 555-1212) because of the short period of time that you spent talking to her. I am going off the assumption that you are spending anywhere from 5 minutes to less than an hour in your conversation with this new girl.

The aim for this article is to take a look at the first impressions a female gets from a guy she just met and examine the reasons as to why she declined to continue communication further. There are thousands of situations in real life that you could encounter a female. For this article, I’m going to pretend you are in line at a local store….be it the video store, CVS, bank, wherever. You are standing in a semi long line and there is a cute female right in front of you. So cute, that you feel the need to talk to her in an attempt to get her number. A good portion of the men out there don’t have the balls to at least try to talk to a female in that situation, so consider yourself 2 steps ahead of the game if you have made the decision to give it a shot and talk to her:

1. Lack of physical attraction

This one is a no-brainer. Simply put, you really had nothing to say to her that caught (and held) her interest and your physical looks aren’t attractive enough to her in order for her to overlook the fact that you are yet another horny guy looking to score some tail. Best advice: Join a gym, brush your teeth, buy better clothes….do something that compliments your looks.

2. Cute as a puppy, dumb as a rock

On the other side of the token, we have guys that could probably put someone like Brad Pitt to shame in the looks department…..but they tend to lack the cranial capacity to carry on an intelligent conversation. Guys like this generally don’t have a hard time picking up women. Sooner or later they will encounter a girl that is superficial enough to overlook the fact that he considers “Hop on Pop” a literary classic.

3. Creepy looking pervert guy

When women are out in public, they tend to have their defenses turned on. Especially if they are attractive. They are so used to guys staring at them that they tend to ignore it with a thinly veiled sense of hostility. If you find yourself staring at a female while in line, and she notices you….and doesn’t smile….there’s a good chance that she has already judged you as some creepy guy. Best thing to do is not make eye contact (don’t even think of giving her body the once-over with your eyes) and treat her like you would treat any other female that you weren’t attracted to. That way when you do open your mouth to speak, you have a clean slate.

4. Desperate Dan

Guys that are desperate REEK of desperation whether they know it or not. Subconsciously they are so desperate that their actions mirror their thoughts without them realizing it at all. Women are highly sensitive creatures and can smell desperation a mile away. Believe me when I tell you, it is a total turnoff. If on the day you are in line about to talk to a girl….ask yourself “am I feeling desperate today?” If so, save yourself some heartbreak and look the other way.

5. Can’t close the deal

So you finally found the balls to approach a female out in public. You got her attention and the first words that come out of your mouth are: “Sooo, I see you like the Tampax brand of tampons.” (The song “Shot Down in Flames” by AC/DC is going through my head right now…)

You need to step up your game in these types of situations. “What in the hell can I say to break the ice with a cute girl who is in line in front of me at the local drugstore buying tampons?” Good question. I can’t give you a right or wrong answer. This all depends on who you are as a person. Let your personality do the talking and if it clicks, you got yourself a phone number. If I were a guy in the same exact situation, I would think twice about talking to girl in line at a drugstore buying tampons. She might be a bit embarrassed in the first place (because you are talking to her while she is holding a box of tampons). If you absolutely have to talk to her, try your best to ignore what she is holding in her hands and instead make a comment like:

“Man these cashiers are sure slow today” or something that effect. Observational humor is probably your only recourse in a situation like this.

There are many more reasons why she didn’t give you her number. Maybe she has a boyfriend, maybe she isn’t into men…..maybe she just had a bad day and doesn’t want to deal with guys talking to her. My only advice to you guys is to play the numbers game and sooner or later you will meet the right female. Just don’t take it too personally when she gives you a dirty look and starts looking around for store security.

This post is in response to an email that I received a few days ago. This person explained to me that she had just met her new boyfriends parents and she got the feeling that they didn’t like her very much. My only advice to her is the following:

“These things happen”.

There really isn’t much you can do when meeting the parents for the first time of your significant other. Either they like you, or they don’t. First impressions are hard to shake off and even harder to change once someone has judged you in their mind. Keep in mind that they are only trying to figure out if you are the right person for their little Johnny or Susie and will most likely have you under the proverbial microscope the entire time. You can’t change who you are, so instead try to tread lightly when meeting your boyfriend or girlfriends parents for the first time. I have compiled a few suggestions that you should keep in mind when meeting the parents of your significant other. Just because the first “meet and greet” went off without a hitch, doesn’t mean you are off the hook. Depending on each person, it could take months for their parents to accept you (if they are really judgmental). Best thing to do is keep a smile on your face and try to avoid doing anyone of the following faux pauxs:

I’m only listing 5 items this time. Everything else would be a waste of your time in reading this article. I could go on and on about “how to dress”, “what to say”, “proper dinner manners” etc, but I’m sure you already have that down pat. My intentions for this article are to help you with a few curveballs that might be thrown your way:

1. Discussing politics.

This reminds me of the time when a friend of mine was invited out to dinner with the parents of his new girlfriend. Over the course of conversation, the topic of the troubled economy was brought up and he took a few swipes at former President Bush. In his mind, it was a “safe bet”, since everyone he knew hated Bush and thought he was the Anti-Christ. Well, it turned out that her parents were HUGE Bush supporters….and after a few (well meaning) verbal pot-shots, the dinner became very uncomfortable.

2. Foul language/thinly veiled racism.

Just because his/her Dad is the re-incarnation of Ralph Kramden, doesn’t mean you need to follow suit in order to impress him. Even one small off-color joke overheard by a distant relative at whatever function you are attending can come back to haunt you. People talk. Relatives gossip. Keep your “F-You’s” and “those damn….” to yourself at the dinner table and beyond. Even if you don’t have one biased belief in your entire body….just one relative (cousin/brother/sister) who happens to overhear something you say, can take it out of context and really screw you over. Save the cusswords and off-color jokes for your friends/bar.

3. I’m not a Lawyer, but I play one on the internet !

Whatever you do, do not lie in order to impress his/her dad or mom. This is not a job interview, you can’t get away with stretching the truth a little bit. These people will be involved in your life the entire time you are dating their son/daughter and people have really good memories. People aren’t stupid and can tell the difference between “being nervous” and “trying too hard to impress”. The former is forgivable and quite natural, the latter might lead them to believe you have some to hide.

4. When in doubt, shut your fat mouth.

Ever heard the saying “Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself” ? Same goes for meeting the parents of your new boyfriend or girlfriend. If by chance his/her dad served in Army as an interrogator and you find yourself getting the third degree, just go with the flow. If you don’t know the answer to a question they are asking you, just tell them that you “aren’t sure”. Tis better to be thought of as a fool, than to open your mouth and confirm it.

5. Sisters/brothers/cousins/aunts/uncles are all watching you….and making mental notes.

Just because her dad slapped you on the shoulder and called you “Son” in the first 10 minutes you meet him, doesn’t mean you are off the hook. If you are at a family function (especially one that is serving alcohol), keep in mind that the entire family is watching you. Even if they don’t act like it, trust me….your words and actions can come back to haunt you. Keep this in mind when you are talking to Uncle Tony and he starts telling you stories of “how much pot” he used to smoke back in college. Now is NOT the time to brag about the 10′ bong you and your buddies bought the other day. (a similar situation happened to me, although it didn’t involve pot. I met her Uncle at a family function and he started bragging about how many bar fights he got into “back in the day”. I related a few stories of my own in the spirit of the conversation. About a week later my girlfriend asked me “so how many fights have you been in”. Doh !)

Keep in mind that if her parents want to find out more information about you, they will. The first place they might start (in this day and age) is the internet. Ever “Googled yourself” ? Check and double-check your Myspace and Facebook pages and clean them up a bit. I have never heard of a parent hiring a private detective, but that doesn’t mean that their parents don’t have friends in high (or low) places that can get more information about you. I’m not just speaking to the potheads and Billy-Bad-Asses out there….ever go out on a night on the town with your girlfriends and a picture might have been taken of you kissing your girlfriends boobs? Gee, wonder where that picture is now? The point here is try to do some reputation management and get your ducks in a row prior to meeting your new boyfriend or girlfriends parents.

Ladies:

I recently emailed Karen and asked her to allow me to give you a few tips on how to tell if a guy is or isn’t into you. I decided to write this article because I have run into a bit of a challenge in my dating life:

I would meet a girl, go out on a date or two with her, then suddenly realize that I was not interested in dating her anymore. Being that I am a guy…it was kind of hard to tell her that “Hey look, it’s just not working out for me, you’re a swell gal and will make some lucky fellow very happy”. I would try to drop little hints here and there, and for most girls that would be enough. With other girls….I don’t think I could give them a clue even if I were to rub them down with horny-clue-musk, put them in a field full of horny clues in the middle of clue mating season.

So to save me an countless other guys out there the headache and heartache of having to spell it out in plain English for you….here are 10 signs that a guy just isn’t into you.

1. Missed Connection

Think back to the last guy you dated for more than a few weeks. Did you find yourself talking to him on the phone much? Send more than a few text messages back and forth during the daytime? How quickly were your attempts at getting a hold of him reciprocated? Chances are he answered your texts or phone calls within a few minutes of you calling or texting, or at least freely gave you a reason as to why it took him a while to get back to you. When I’m not into a girl, my cell phone mysteriously does not get text messages from her and her phone calls tend to go straight to voice mail. Emails? Whoopsie, that stupid spam folder is acting up again.

2. Busy as a Beaver

“Gee Susie, I would love to hang out with you and your drunken slutty friends at the local bar tonight…..but I have been meaning to re-arrange my sock drawer now for ages. My socks have invaded the homeland of my underwear and my cowboy hat (you know, the real small one with certain “size issues”) has decided that my socks harbor weapons of mass destruction and are about to invade the drawer up on top. As you can see it’s a real Wild Wild West scenario going on here…

What am I doing tomorrow night? Uhhh…Need to go help Grandma dust her living room.”

In all seriousness, whenever I’m fed up with a girl I just met, I suddenly become super busy. I think 2-3 moves ahead so if she calls me out on anything, I always have a logical explanation as to why I’m busy. I would assume most guys out there are like that as well.

3. Me, Me, Me.

Whenever I’m just not feeling a girl, I tend to mentally check out. Like quicker than leaving a Best Western motel that smells like stale hookers and dead cockroaches. When I’m mentally checked out of the conversation/relationship, my thoughts and actions naturally turn to the most important thing in life: Me.
If she starts talking to me, I subconsciously steer the topic of conversation towards me. I quit trying to learn more about her and instead use her as a crutch for all of my issues/problems. Can’t beat free psychiatry while downing a pint or two at the local bar.

4. How YOU doin’ ?

If we are out in public and you notice me checking out other females….you can think to yourself one of two things:

1. “He’s a no good dog of a man.”
2. “Hrmm….Let’s see here….he is out on a date with me, but he is checking out other women. By George, I think I’ve got it ! He’s not into me !”

Oh how I wish #2 was the answer that was chosen more often.

5. Why can’t we be friends! Why can’t we be friends? Why can’t we be friends ??!!! @*#*$!!!

You know who you remind me of? My sister. I think you two would get along juuuust great. You sure are a swell friend. Knock, knock. Who’s there? (in a whispered voice: “your best friend”).

7. My own private strip club.

True story: (names and dates have been changed to protect my neck and legs, of which I have grown fondly attached to. Honestly, I think she was partially related to the mob and the last thing I want is for her to read this, get pissed and put a hit out on me).

So I was dating this chick who grew up in Antarctica. I liked her as a friend, but was having a very hard time getting her to understand that “friends” is the level where it needed to stay. So we decided to go on a nature hike one day…she wore a low cut shirt and some short shorts that day and the entire time she was brushing up against me. Even though I’m a guy, and even though most guys like me are clueless…I think it was a safe bet that she was trying to come onto me. So as we are finishing up our hike on our way back to the car she made the following random comment:

“My bra that I just bought is making my boobs pop out of my shirt”.

to which I replied (without skipping a beat):

“Did you save the receipt?”

8. You love me? I blehblahblah you too…

You see, it’s not that I’m incapable of expressing my emotions as a guy, but rather I am incapable of expressing emotions towards a girl that I’m not into. I tend to keep an active emotional distance from women that I’m not into and if you so much as dip your pinky toe over that line….it creates for a somewhat awkward situation.

9. Any Port in a Storm.

I will admit it. I have sometimes just stayed with a girl longer than I wanted to because the sex was so great (or I was in a real dry spell). A good way to tell that if a guy isn’t into you is to look at how often he wants sex and what happens after the sex. If he only calls you at 3am on a Friday night, drunk off his ass….and then leaves 20 minutes later, chances are he just isn’t into you. If he continually steers the topic of conversation towards the wants and needs of his ding-a-ling, chances are he just isn’t into you for anything else other than sex. At this point, you have 1 of 2 options. Dump the jerk faster than a bad habit, or continue to fool yourself thinking that sex will make him love you. (it never does from a guys point of view).

10. Survivor Man.

When it comes to females that I’m just not into, I try my hardest to not let them know where I live. Meeting my friends and family? Fugghedaboutit. Simply put: Let’s keep an amicable distance between us because I do not want you in my personal life.

There you have it. 10 signs that you can use to determine whether or not a guy is into you. Guys are not complicated and usually your first instinct is the right instinct. Don’t fool yourself, or waste any time/money/emotions on the guy. Move on and be the better person….

Even if you manage to change the guys mind, it will most likely be only for a while and even then you are just setting yourself up for future heartbreak. Just remember that you cannot fit a square peg into a round hole. If it wasn’t meant to work, then it wasn’t meant to work.

This article is going to teach you how to write a great (not good) email on eHarmony or any other online dating service.

Over the course of any given month, I get about 40-50 emails from people asking me for dating advice. Lately I have been noticing a trend amongst the females in which they are not able to get guys to respond to their emails. For illustration purposes, I am going to use my friend Sally who came to me with the exact same problem last week.

Sally is a very attractive 26 year old. She has a good job and comes from a great family. She is funny and witty and the exact type of girl that any guy would dream of dating. With one exception…

In the past week and a half, she has emailed about 15 different guys and not one has responded to her request for communication. I took a look at her personality profile, then took a look at her emails and found the root cause of the problem. I asked her to write an email to one of her matches, but not send it.

She gave me her permission to cut and paste the email into this post:

“Hi John ! I just got back from Pilates class and I’m tired. Work was just out of hand today…Had 3 meetings and the second one caused me to be late for the third one. Oh well, I shouldn’t complain because for the past 4 years I have been working towards this promotion and I guess it comes with the territory. After work I had exactly 30 minutes to drop my car off at the dealership before Pilates class began. The girl at the rental car place was taking her sweet time and the printer was malfunctioning so by the time I got out of there I was already 15 minutes late to class.

I guess this is just one of those days for me !

Well, hope you had a great day and ttyl !”

- Sally

Ok, so what we have here on the surface is a seemingly innocuous looking email from Sally to a guy named John. In it, she describes her hectic day and how nobody/nothing was on time. That nice….if “John” was the brand name of a diary that she picked up at Staples instead of a live human being.

When John reads this email, what is he going to think/say? I would consider myself a master linguist and even I would have a hard time responding to that email. Sally gave John nothing to go off of. She basically treated him as if he was her personal diary. This is extremely impersonal and basically says to John:

“Hey, I’m the center of attention here and TMZ and the Paparazzi should be following me around with a t.v. crew and camera to document the most mundane events in my life.” See you at 6:30pm on Fox Channel 11 right after the Simpsons !!

This email is a clear red flag to John that she might be somewhat self absorbed (perhaps a bit shallow) and atrocious at interpersonal communication skills. I have known Sally for almost 10 years and she does not fit into one of those categories. Sally is relatively new to online dating and doesn’t realize that there is an unwritten code of conduct when it comes to writing emails. I pointed this out to her and she told me that she really couldn’t think of anything interesting to say….

Sally met John through eHarmony. I told her that it was inexcusable that she could not think of anything interesting to say to him. Had she been a member of one of the “lower end” online dating services, wherein all you have to go off of is a cheesy picture and a couple of paragraphs of “about me” then I could plausibly understand….but not with eHarmony.

In a nutshell, before you are given the option to freely communicate with your matches on eHarmony, you must first go through something called “guided communication” wherein you have to choose 4 questions to send to your match. eHarmony already gives you the questions (or you can ask your own) and all your match has to do is respond to those questions either in their own words or pre-answers that eHarmony lists.

So before you get to the point where you can freely communicate back and forth in the eHarmony system, you have already gotten to know quite a bit about the other person. There is a ton of information that you can use to compose a very well written, thoughtful email to your matches on eHarmony.

I told Sally that she should have gone back to those Q&A “guided communication” section and pulled a couple of good questions from his answers. She could have asked him to expand upon his love for dining and cooking. She could have asked him where he plans on traveling this year since he told her that he loves to travel internationally. In the end, I took a look at her guided communication with John and created a sample email that she SHOULD have sent him in the first place:

“Hey John ! Well, we finally made it to open communication ! So tell me a bit more about your love for cooking….what’s your favorite cooking style? Mine is Italian. I don’t cook as often as I like to due to my sometimes hectic work schedule, but when I do I love to make the same pasta dishes that my Grandmother brought here from the old country. Any plans on going out of the country this year? I just got back from Hawaii a few months ago (for work). I haven’t been outside the country but am starting to do some research on flights as I would love to go to Italy this summer.

Anyways, hope you had a great day and talk to you soon !”

- Sally

The above email was short and sweet, yet to the point. In it, there are many topics of discussion that John can “pull from” to reply back with a great response. Trust me, if a man is into you….and you send him an email that is similar to what I just wrote, he will have no problem composing a great reply.

That email did not give out any irrelevant information about Sally (that would raise a red flag in John’s mind). Sally instead greeted him, picked out two things to further expand upon (that they briefly spoke about via “guided communication”) and then said her goodbye. Sally did not come off as desperate, needy, clingy or gave off any sort of red flags that would send John packing for the hills. It did however give John much information to pull from when he writes his reply back to Sally.

Long emails are fine….just not for the first 3 or 4 times you communicate. Long winded emails are a very good indication of chemistry and attraction, but when you start throwing out irrelevant information from the get-go, you are only scaring people away.

This interview is continued from “Interview with a Cougar, Part 2.“

…we somehow wound up in my bedroom. We were both heavily intoxicated and we wound up having sex. It was honestly the best sex I have had since….I honestly cannot remember when. After a few months of seeing each other (including a 3 some with his 20 year old friend) it kind of fizzled out. It was at this point I had apparently made a name for myself and had several young men in their late teens/early 20’s that were wanting to date me.

ODM: I see….so what exactly was it about 18 and 19 year old guys that did it for you?

Debra: At first it was the excitement of it all….then after a while it was really more about convenience than anything else. Everything was light and breezy….no pressure, no having to stress about going out or dealing with “issues” that most single men my age have. I did not need a man to take care of me financially, so that really only left one particular area that needed to be serviced.

ODM: What did your friends think?

Debra: I hang out with a loosely knit group of 30-40 year old professional women. We used to think of ourselves as the “LA version” of Sex and the City. Having a 19 year old boytoy by my side was just like rocking the latest Prada handbag. It was the one fashion accessory that most women my age could not get because Father Time had not been as kind to them as he was to me. A few of my friends who had sons that were 18 and 19 years old did frown upon it a bit but I paid them no attention. “Jealousy” was the first word that crossed my mind whenever someone said something negative…

ODM: So after the initial excitement died down….when did you start taking interest in seriously dating younger men for a committed relationship?

Debra: I would say probably after the first year or so. I only dated 4 guys in that period of time, and all were brief flings. I was at one of the local bars down in Newport Beach with a group of girlfriends. There was this one young man, impeccably dressed….and he had this air of confidence to himself that is normally found in professional men in their 50’s and 60’s. He was the one who approached me and we spent the entire night together drinking and dancing. He asked for my phone number at the end of the night and I really didn’t give it any second thought. I was not expecting him to call me back. Sure enough a few days later my phone rings and he was asking me out to dinner. One thing led to another and in a few short weeks we were boyfriend girlfriend. During the entire course of that relationship, it became very clear to me that dating younger men was the only way to go. An older man could NOT possibly give me everything this 25 year old had to offer. Great body, hot looks, funny, charming, not jaded, no ex-wife/alimony/child support baggage…..Just a great human being that loved to go out and enjoy life. Isn’t that what we are all looking for?

ODM: Are you still dating him?

Debra: No, it ended after about 8 months for reasons that I would rather not get into. We are still very good friends and I care a lot about him.

ODM: Are you single now?

Debra: Yes.

ODM: Where do you go to find younger men? How do you go about approaching them without it turning into a potentially awkward moment?

Debra: Well, truth be told….there have been no awkward moments when it comes to picking up younger guys. If I’m out at a trendy bar or even at the supermarket I can tell right off the bat that they are into me. If I can compare men to books for a minute…..the “older” men in their 40’s and 50’s are kind of like an advanced Trigonometry math book. Hard as hell to understand their motives/intentions and even harder to force myself to like. Younger men in their late teens/early 20’s are kind of like a Dr. Seuss book. Fun, entertaining and by just looking at the cover of the book, you already know what it’s about. Hop on Pop; Green Eggs and Ham, Thank you Ma’am.

When a 20 year old guy is staring at you from across the way, it is a pretty forgone conclusion that he wants to talk to you. Most guys that age are typically shy and as such I find myself being the one having to initiate conversation and breaking the ice. These same guys have told me that it was so easy to talk to me and that they felt very comfortable from the minute I walked over there and started to chit-chat. They also have told me that it is not the same way when it comes to talking to women their own age.

ODM: Let’s talk about the “S” word for a minute….

Debra: (nervous laugh)

ODM: “Sugar Mommy”. Do you find that most younger guys expect you to pay their way and shower them with gifts and whatnot?

Debra: Honestly? No. Most guys that age are poor, broke college students and are somewhat shy about going out because they feel that they have to pay because they are the guy. I make it a point to let them know from the start that I realize that they are just starting out in life and I have no problem footing the bill most (read: all) of the time. They seem to like it. My last boyfriend was a sophomore in college and was working as a waiter making minimum wage and tips. I think that amounted to a little under $250 a week in take-home. I took him out one weekend to South Coast Plaza (an affluent mall located in Orange County, Ca. – Karen) and bought him $2500.00 worth of new clothes. About half of that was spent on dress clothes. I would also give him $500 a week in cash to spend on food/etc. Life is tough when you are in your early 20’s, going to school and working a crap job. I had the means to support him and I also cared very deeply for him….so why not?

ODM: Where there ever any indications that he was just using you for sex and money?

Debra: Never did that thought occur to me. You can pretty much tell within the first few dates if it is going to turn into a real relationship or just some fling. I’m over the “flings” and am looking for a real relationship.

ODM: Have you ever tried an online dating service?

Debra: I am currently a member of 2 online dating services. There seems to be one in particular that for whatever reason attracts younger men looking to date older women. With online dating, it is very easy to weed out the good ones from the bad ones and at the end of the night I’m not stuck with a $150 bar tab and a hangover the next morning.

ODM: So where do you see yourself in 5-10 years from now?

Debra: In a loving, committed relationship with a man 15-20 years my junior. I realize that society in general is becoming more liberal and accepting than it was 20 years ago. Although, there are still people out there who frown upon my choice of lifestyle. I realize this and as such try to keep my dating preferences a secret as much as I can. At the end of the day and when it is all said and done, all that matters is that you are spending the night with the person that makes you happy the most.

ODM: Do you have any thoughts for young men/older women who are looking to try dating each other?

Debra: Sure.

Younger men: If it is just a sexual fantasy to “hook up” with an older woman, and you have no further intentions in life than that, please let them know from the beginning. Even though we are a bit “older”, we still have feelings. If you are looking for a relationship, be honest and treat us with respect. We have a lot to offer you (more than most women your age) and you will soon come to find out just how rewarding it is to be dating a woman that is older than you.

Cougars: This is it ladies. We have finally come to a point in life where we don’t need a man our age to take care of us financially. We are tired of the b.s. that is sometimes associated with dating men our own age. Be proud of the fact that you are a liberated, strong female and empower yourself in your daily life. When you are dating younger men, realize that even though they are younger, they are still men. There are good apples and there are bad apples. Keep your eyes open, and feet on the ground and when you do finally find that special guy you will find yourself experiencing a richness in life in ways you never thought imaginable.

Recently, I posted an interview with a cougar article about
a woman in her 40’s who considers herself a “cougar”. A
cougar is a 40-50 year old female who dates men 15-20
years her junior.

In the past few weeks I have gotten more than a few
emails requesting that I post the entire interview. The interview
is quite long and thorough, so I have broken it up into 2 parts.
The first part (the part below) is an introduction. You will get
to know the “cougar” and her background story. The second
part picks up where the first part left off.

(I am using false names for the various people mentioned in this
story to protect their identity.)

ODM: Hello Debra, thank you for taking the
time to sit down and chat with me.

Debra: Hello Karen.

ODM: So let’s get right into it. Why don’t you
start off by telling our readers a little bit about yourself?

Debra: Well, I am a 47 years old and have been
divorced now for a little over 8 years. I have 2 teenage daughters
(18 and 19) and live in what I would consider a middle class
neighborhood. I received my M.B.A. from a local University,
although I put my career on hold to raise my family. I now sell real
estate here in Southern California.

ODM: Would you consider yourself a “successful
female”?

Debra: Lol, yes I guess you can say so. It took a
lot of hard work to get to where I am at right now in life and my
ex-husband was of little to no help. Once the divorce was final,
I set out to reclaim the life I had envisioned I would have, prior
to getting married.

ODM: So tell me a bit more about your dating
experiences after your divorce.

Debra: Like most females who find themselves
thrust back into the dating scene after a long marriage, I had
somewhat of a hard time meeting what I would consider “the right guy”.
I did the bar scene, went out on a few atrocious blind dates set up by
well meaning friends and none of those really panned out.

It was funny…the same type of guys that I dated prior to getting
married were just not doing it for me anymore. I got tired of hearing
the same old stories from guys my age….they either talked nonstop
about their divorce or their kids. Older guys also seemed to be a bit
jaded on dating as well as their schedules were unnecessarily complicated
with child custody time issues, ex wives and long hours at the office.

ODM: So is this when you decided to start dating
younger men?

Debra: I never really saw it as a conscious choice to
start dating younger men. The majority of the guys I dated after my
divorce were in their mid-to-late 40’s. I even went out with a few 60
year olds. It seemed as if each and every one of these guys were stuck
in a time warp. They pretty much listened to the same type of music,
dressed the same way and lived the same boring lifestyle. They seemed
to go on and on about their ex’s and their divorce, or I would have to sit
through an hour long presentation about their illustrious careers and how
great they were.

I was on a mission to find myself, to regain my individuality. This was not
going to be accomplished by sitting home on a Saturday night or going out
on yet another boring dinner date only to be taken back to his place and
have to “wait a few” before the Viagra starts kicking in.

ODM: Did the physical characteristics of “older”
men in their 40’s turn you off?

Debra: Honestly? Yes. A big fat beer belly and hair
where there should not be any hair just wasn’t doing it for me. Not to
mention most men over 40 tend to let themselves go physically. They
don’t take the time to work out like younger men do. After the divorce,
I found myself needing more physical contact from a man than ever before.

ODM: Tell me about your first experience with
dating a younger man.

Debra: You are going to change my name on here?

ODM: I will change it prior to publishing this interview.

Debra: About 2 years ago my 18 year old daughter
was planning on going to a party with some of her college friends.
The parents of the person having the party were out of town.
This would be the first party that she attended (to my knowledge)
in college. If the kids nowadays are anything like how we were
back in the 70’s….I knew there would be alcohol and quite possibly
drugs at the party. I suggested that she have a small get-together
at our house instead. That way I could at least cut out the drugs
part of the equation. I knew that the teenagers would find a way
to get drunk so I made the decision to allow alcohol at the party,
provided that everyone who was drinking would spend the night.
I know I am going to get some flak for allowing this…but I would rather have
the kids drinking at my place and sleeping it off on my couch than getting
into a car and driving drunk. This way, I could also monitor alcohol
consumption of the teenagers.

The night went off considerably well, no major incidents. There were
about 15 college students in total that showed up. I spent a good
portion of the night playing hostess and even joined the kids at the
table for a game of poker. I don’t quite remember the rest of the
details, but there was this 18 year old named Brian (name changed – Karen)
who was the life of the party. He was being a bit flirtatious with all the
girls (including myself) and I think I might have reciprocated here and
there. As the night drew on, one thing led to another and we somehow
wound up…

I have split this interview into 2 posts. The entire interview
is well over 2500 words and as such is kind of hard to read in one
long post. Click below to continue to the third and final part of
Interview with a Cougar.

I have compiled a little list of the more memorable
Quotes About Being Single:

The reason I am posting this is because it is currently
Saturday night and (yet again) I am sitting home. Alone.
No date on the horizon. Hopefully, this little list of
quotes about being single will find some other soul out
there on the internet who is sitting home alone. Some
