5 Tips for Dating as a Single Mom

If you’re a single mother, you are probably well aware that a good portion of the guys out there cringe at the notion of dating a woman with a child. It’s not that they don’t like children, but rather they see the girl as having too much baggage. If they do enter into a relationship with a single mom, they feel that they would come 2nd place to the kid.
So how does a single mom in this day and age date?
The good news is that with the advent of the internet and the various online dating sites, it is not too hard for a single mom to find a guy who is interested in dating her. The online dating sites are not what they once were: A single fat guy sitting in his parents basement. In this day and age it is socially acceptable for anyone to join an online dating site. By doing so, you are opening up a whole new world of dating possibilities. There are many good men out there who have their proverbial act together who wouldn’t think twice about dating a girl with a child. However, as a single mom there are a few things you will want to keep in mind if you decide to start dating again.
Here are 10 tips for online dating (or dating in general) as a single mom:
1. Safety First
This is pretty much a no-brainer. As a single mom, your child must come first and foremost. You need to be somewhat more selective on who you choose to date. If you meet a guy whom you think you might hit it off with, run a quick background check on them. There are many websites that offer free background checks, and some that charge a nominal fee. Don’t bring guys over to your house unless you trust the 110% and don’t put yourself in any situations that could potentially be dangerous. Again, a no-brainer.
2. Booty Call Bob
It’s a fact that most guys only think with a certain body part. The general consensus amongst most guys out there is that single moms are easy pickings when it comes to booty calls. Try to feel the guy out (proverbially speaking) prior to going out on a date with him. If that doesn’t work, play hard to get for a few days, or even a few weeks to let him know that you’re looking for more than cheap meaningless sex. Or maybe you aren’t?
3. Babysitters
For most single moms, it can be a pain in the ass to find a babysitter. Try to find a relative or a trusted neighbor who is willing to watch your kid while you go out. There are many cheap (but safe) babysitting services out there that are run by local community members. A great place to look for such services is the local chamber of commerce, or even a church. One of the main things a guy hates about dating a woman with a child is that sometimes she can’t go out due to the fact that she can’t find a babysitter. You can avoid this potential problem by simply choosing a schedule and sticking to it. That way you know exactly when you and your date can hang out and sometimes you might get lucky and are able to find a babysitter for last minute plans.
4. Introducing Your Date to your Child
I would strongly advise you to not allow your children to have any interaction with the guy(s) you are dating until you are in a serious, committed relationship. “Any interaction” being the child seeing a strange guy in your house. If you do invite your date over, make sure you child is put to sleep or at a neighbors house. Even though it may seem completely innocent on your part, you don’t want your child seeing you with a new man every few weeks. I’m not a psychologist, but common sense would dictate that you only introduce your kid to your new boyfriend after the fact he has become your boyfriend.
5. What’s the Best Online Dating Site for Single Moms?
That really all depends on what you are looking for. Some of the preferred online dating sites for single moms are eHarmony, PerfectMatch.com and Chemistry.com. These sites are widely regarded as “high end” online dating sites where you will mostly meet guys who are serious about entering into a relationship. The downside is that these sites can cost upwards of $10-$20 more a month. Freebie sites like PlentyofFish are….well….free. But as with anything in life you get what you pay for. Your chances of meeting a weirdo in an online dating site exponentially increase if you join up with one of the freebie online dating sites. Rounding off the list are the mainstream online dating sites like Match.com, Date.com and Yahoo Personals. These online dating sites are a good middle ground to start off at. I would however recommend you stick to the “high end” online dating sites as I personally know of several single moms who are members of eHarmony and PerfectMatch and are successfully (and happily) dating men they met on there.
