10 Cheap Date Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank
Apr 19, 2010 by Karen · Leave a Comment
So you’re unemployed and haven’t been able to find a job in the past 2 years. You have seen (and can recite by memory) every single “I Love Lucy” episode by heart. Potential employers pass the resume you dropped off last week around the office for a good laugh.
Screw ‘em. You just met this really cute girl a couple of weeks ago and she just agreed to go out on a first date with you. What better way to take your mind off your financial woes?
There’s just one problem: You’re on a budget and your pants pockets look like rabbit ears. Not all women are money grubbing gold diggers, but you need to set your first date sights a little higher than McDonalds, a Happy Meal and going to Best Buy to watch a movie on their demo t.v. while pretending to be interested in buying one.
Desperate times call for desperate measures in this day and age. Here are 10 surefire tips on how to spend like a pauper and live like a King (if even for just a few hours on a Friday night).
1. COUPON CODES
Remember this word. Memorize it. Tattoo it on your forehead. Coupon codes are a guys best friend when it comes time to plan the first date. Most first date activities out there can be purchased or planned online. Google the name of item or event that you are planning on buying/attending and enter the words “coupon code” at the end. Chances are you will find a site that lists a coupon code for whatever website you are wanting to buy from. Some variations are “promo codes” and “promotional codes”. Most websites offer some sort of coupon code and usually a quick Google search will result in a few.
2. Local events
Sometimes your local newspaper will list various events that are taking place on a particular weekend. Usually these events are discounted towards the public and an entire days worth of fun can be had for pennies on the dollar.
3. Aquariums
All women love cute little fishies !! If not fishies, then cute little dolphins that were kidnapped from their natural marine environment and made to perform like common seals for public entertainment. Most aquariums offer discounted tickets on certain days of the week. The best part is that these days are usually low attendance so you won’t have to deal with annoying crowds.
4. Museums
Same goes for museums. Ticket prices are dirt cheap and all you need is a button-down shirt and some dress shoes and you will look and act the part. Read up on a few of the art exhibits prior to going and she will be very impressed at how cultured you are.
5. Flying lessons
Most local airports offer extremely cheap “first flights” for people who are thinking about getting their pilots license. The last airport I went to charged $50 for a 1 hour flight in a Cessna airplane (with a license pilot accompanying you, of course).
6. Wine Tours
Many counties in the US have local wineries or distilleries and discount their tour tickets heavily. The Coors Brewing factory tour in Golden Colorado is one of the better ones I have been on. To boot, at the end of the tour you usually get a few samples of booze/liquor to try out.
7. Starbucks
As much as I hate to list this overused date location….it does serve a useful purpose. On the off chance that you are not 100% sure if you will like the guy/girl that you are going out on a first date with, Starbucks is the place to meet up. If after a few minutes of conversation you realize you both are potential soulmates, you can easily move the date to a better location. If not, then you are only out $35 for 2 cups of Starbucks coffee.
8. Amusement Parks
Amusement parks are a bit different than museums and aquariums for the simple fact that you might find yourself stuck in a 1 hour line waiting to get onto a roller coaster. It’s a great way to get to know your date but be forewarned: If for whatever reason you suddenly realize you don’t like the person you are out on a first date with at an amusement park….you might find it a bit hard to just up and leave. Usually people spend upwards of 5-8 hours at an amusement park so caveat emptor. Amusement parks discount their tickets heavily on the weekdays and are usually running some sort of seasonal promotion.
9. Go for a drive in the country
Assuming that the girl trusts you aren’t some ax murdering serial killer (and hopefully you’re not), a country drive is a great way to spend a weekend without spending much money, except for gas. Usually, little side trips can be found along the way with either local attractions or scenic viewpoints.
I had one of my best dates with a girl whom I took down to the local sea side cliffs for a mini nature hike. Total cost: $5 for 2 bottles of water.
10. Bike ride
Bike rides are another cheap way of spending a few hours. Just be sure you are in quasi-decent physical shape and don’t go beyond your physical capabilities. The last “bike ride date” I went on…didn’t go so well. She was in much better shape than I was, and towards the end of the ride, I was keeping my eye peeling for a defibrillator. Lunch can be had along the way of your bike ride and when it’s all said and done, is probably one of the best “first date” memories you can create.
